Musical Experience

David Manley’s musical experience has encompassed three decades of performance, pedagogy, accompaniment, & writing. He received his B.A. in Music at CSU Chico (piano performance and composition) and undertook graduate studies in composition at CSU San Francisco.

Mr. Manley’s diverse range of musical interests has included a variety of instrumental studies (piano, harpsichord, violin, viola, & guitar) & performing styles (classical, jazz, pop, rock & musical theater). He has served as accompanist & vocal coach for many singers & choral groups, and music director for many musical theater companies.

Mr. Manley teaches music courses regularly at University of Silicon Valley (formerly Cogswell College) in music theory, musicianship & songwriting; and gives private instruction on piano, guitar, and voice from his studio in San Francisco. Private lessons are also available at Studio Fourth Street in San Rafael.

Classical keyboard studies have included tutelage with Robert Bowman, CSU Chico (piano and harpsichord); David Roethe, CSU Chico (Baroque performance practice); and Eliane Lust’s Le Piano Studio (master classes).

Composition studies were begun at CSU Chico with Alfred Loeffler and continued at CSU San Francisco with Henry Onderdonk. Original compositions include piano pieces, song cycles, chamber works, and arrangements for small ensembles.

String instrument studies have included instruction with David Mallory, CSU Chico (violin); Ward Fenley, CSU Sacramento (violin); & David Thorp (viola). Orchestral performances have included concerts with the Apollo Orchestra, Apollo Baroque Orchestra, & Chico Symphony.

Popular music activities have included experience as a songwriter & performer (guitar, violin & vocals) for rock bands such as The Wayward Bus and various solo projects.

Jazz & Blues activities have included lessons with jazz pianist Adam Domash and performing at miscellaneous gigs and cabaret performances.
